Well, I'm back to sewing and I'm making Colette pattern Crepe. And it has me feeling sad right now. It is not working out so well. Don't get me wrong, it is a lovely pattern in the photograph. I just can't figure what size I am according to the Colette pattern measurements.
I typically sew using Vogue patterns and their sizing work for me with some length adjustment. But this is no Vogue Pattern.
Could it actually be that my body shape according to Colette ranges from a size 6 to 16? Yikes, I didn't think my body was that out of wack!
Colette's guideline for finding your size states, "Colette Patterns have less ease than many other patterns to provide a closer, more tailored fit. If you are between sizes, choose the larger size." Exclamation mark!
It is certainly not designed for the petite in mind. Maybe it is that Colette patterns are designed for the youth market and my generous hips and petite proportions are beyond their demographic?
As for right now I've given up trying to "make it work" as Tim Gunn would say. Sorry Tim.
Right now it is in the washing machine gods hands and then a spin with the dryer gods. Maybe they could shrink into a better fit? Or maybe I should be planning another project with the fabric that I can rescue from this oversized dress.
All I know is that I did some serious mis-calculating and have to do some serious re-thinking to see if I could make it work.

I think Colette patterns are designed for a pretty narrow hip. I just checked their sizing, and I would be smaller than a 0 in the bust (really?!) and a 10 in the hips. I'm a pear, but in most patterns, I only span 3-4 sizes, not 6+. I was glad to see your post; my next pattern purchase will probably be a Colette, and I'll definitely be careful about sizing and fitting.
ReplyDeleteI'm glad I didn't turn you off Colette patterns, they are beautiful patterns and I do want to try the Crepe dress again. I was just taken back at how it was fitting as I pieced it together. I'm also a pear shape and you're right the dress measurements do seem to be for those without hips. I think I will have a great deal of altering to do it work but I still think it will be worth it.
