The Elusive Zipper

Where on earth can you find a six inch separating zipper that isn't sold as a 5 000 piece minimum order? Anyone? I would really appreciate the help on this one.

You see, I picked up Vogue 1507 and I'm dreaming about those pants in a white denim but I can't find a 6" separating zipper. I've checked high and low, at all the fabric stores in the city and I've checked online as well. Even Vogue's online fabric store doesn't carry 6" separating zippers. Oh Vogue patterns, how you tease me with a desirable design!
I'm not giving up hope. I actually did pick up a nine inch separating zipper, the smallest length that I could find.

The thought was to try and remove those metal clasps and reapply them three inches below. Just one flaw in my plan. My right hand is swollen today and my fingers are killing me. Could it be that the sewing gods are trying to tell me something?

Like maybe I shouldn't sew "fitted through hips" pants? Naw, that can't be it. So the search for this little treasure continues. Has anyone seen a six inch separating zipper in their corner of the world? Perhaps buried in your zipper collection? That you wouldn't mind selling?

Happy Sewing!

  1. I think it may be OK - the pattern's notion list says "6 inch zipper" with no mention of "separating". Of course, that's the website info and you may be seeing more on the pattern envelope. And, if so, shortening a nylon zipper from the top is really easy...just stitch back and forth a few times across the coils. Sewing through nylon is no problem, but when I do this I use a needle that is ready to be retired. If you end up with a too-long metal zipper that you want to shorten from the top, hand-sewing a bar tack over the teeth works well. (Not, of course, until your hand gets better - hope that is soon!)

    1. Actually, there is no mention of it on the envelope either. Not until you open and read the pattern instructions do you discover that you'll need a separating zipper. Surprise! I'm going to give shortening a nylon zipper a try when the hand cooperates.

  2. Zipperstop.com will do a custom-length separating zipper. It costs an extra $1 but at least you don't have to buy 5,000 of them!

    1. Thank you! Thank you so much for the link! I ordered two this evening. Have you seen Erica B's version? She just finished the top and pants, it's gorgeous!

  3. Dressew in Vancouver? Not sure they have them that small, but they had a massive selection when I was there yesterday. Am on holiday in Vancouver! What colour?

    1. Oh my goodness! What a generous offer, thank you. I already ordered three custom-sized on-line but thank you. Enjoy your holiday and all that sewing-type sewing!
