Never Say Never...

Yes, I do remember professing my lack of fondness over PDF patterns, claiming that I'm an old fashion gal who prefers to have a hard copy instead of printing off a PDF file. Never say never...

"Joker" from OkiStyle

I couldn't resist this pattern a couple of weeks ago from OkiStyle found on Etsy.com. It is a pattern by Oki Bukhuu. Oki heads a one-woman design team from Germany and makes patterns that are so wonderfully unique. So, I did something I thought I would never do, I picked up the PDF pattern, saved it on a USB stick, and drove down to a print shop to have it printed. Now, I have to tape it all together. ~sigh~

BeckyMc left a comment regarding how she handles PDF files, and I think I will have to keep her words of wisdom in mind when I make a trip to the hardware store.

Do you like PDF patterns or do you avoid them at all costs?  And has anyone made the Joker or any other OkiStyle patterns?

Happy Sewing!

  1. That looks like a great blouse. Do let us know what you think of it when you've made it up. I'm not a fan of taping together PDFs patterns, but in the last two weeks have done 4. I usually trace the pattern size off, but this week I just cut, really couldn't be bothered to trace after I spent ages taping together.

    1. I have two projects that I would like to get done before this one and then it will jump queue. I think I might give the idea that Sox posted about just tracing the sheets without taping them and seeing how that works.

  2. Do not like PDF patterns. Have a few free ones and a couple of simple patterns. I also have one I will never use that is on my computer. i think the only ones I may purchase in the future are InHouse patterns.

  3. I don't mind. If I like the pattern then it's worth to purchase it. This a great looking blouse and love to see how it looks when it's finished and how the sewing went along.

    1. I couldn't find any reviews from anyone who made this one up, I'm quite curious myself. The instructions look great and come with good photos along the way.

  4. I will purchase a PDF pattern if it is something unique that I can't find preprinted, or if I need the pattern immediately. I like this blouse pattern too, and some of the other OkiStyle pattern are really interesting. Thanks for providing the link.

    1. Your welcome, I agree there are some beautifully interesting patterns in her shop. Depending on this experience (sizing), I might have to make another visit.

  5. That looks like a really interesting blouse and some of the others looks delightfully different as well. What I don't like is the lack of style line drawings on her site. Does the pattern include style lines?
I've bought some pdfs and also hate taping them together. The painter's tape idea is a good one but I read a comment on someone's blog (and I wish I could remember who said it) that she doesn't tape the pages together at all. She takes page one, traces the relevant part, goes to page 2 and lines up the marks and lines on her tracing paper, traces that page, and so on. I've tried that and it works quite well and you don't have fuss with the tape.

    1. Thank you for this suggestion, I think I will go with this instead of the painter's tape! No line drawings but a very detailed and photographed set of instructions and pattern piece outlines.

  6. I use them but I do not like them!! :) I really like (and have great luck) with Style Arc tops so I am happy to buy those via PDF to get 3 sizes. But I don't find mucking around with the patterns to be much fun. at all.

The top is gorgeous and would look really fantastic with slim pants or a longer skirt! Can't wait to see it.

    1. Sounds like the consensus is that I should pour a glass of wine and throw on some good tunes while I piece and trace out this pattern. I'll have to do some serious crunches if I want to wear this top with slim pants, so a longer skirt it will be. I'm looking forward to this project. I just have to get a couple done first.

  7. I don't mind PDF patterns at all, but currently lack access to a laserjet printer. So, no PDF patterns for me! They were a pain in the butt to tape together (and store), but I've since gotten used to that. The upside is that they're more durable than tissue patterns, so they can better stand up to alteration/hacking.

I like this Etsy store of patterns, though I'm intrigued that someone above pointed out a lack of line drawings. That's so key! Every pattern really must include them.
