Is Velvet and Velour Making a Comeback?

Okay, I'm not sure if velvet and velour is really making a comeback or if the fabric store stocking up on Halloween fabric? I've been noticing velvet fabrics appearing at the fabric store over the past few weeks but yesterday I almost let out a bloodcurdling scream when I turned around and spotted a table of velour fabrics.

I'm not kidding.

I wish I were, but I'm not.

And then I laughed at the thought of velour tracksuits making a comeback. Oh gawd, please no!

Even scarier, I have some stretch velvet-like fabric in my stash from the last decade that this fabric was "in" sometime last century. I even have a black with a taupe floral print velvet in my stash. This might be my opportunity to make that 1920's Archival Collection coat and cape from McCall's.

It would make a cute fall coat (that I would have nowhere to wear such a item). Or I can wear it for Halloween by adding a strand of pearls for a flapper look. And then donate it to the Costume Museum of Canada.

This just might be the year that I stash bust all that velvet and stretchy velvet stuff out of my stash without ending up with a track suit [queue the bloodcurdling scream track].

How about you? Will velvet or velour become part of your Halloween look or do you have other plans for this luxurious fabric?

Happy Sewing!

  1. Wouldn't mind one of those track suits for home lounging, though I'd never wear it in public. I haven't seen velour or velvet making an appearance in Vancouver so maybe just in colder areas?

    1. And I spotted it at Fabricland. Possibly, it's a regional thing.

  2. I hope it's going to be a comeback. I have few pieces of stretch velvet in my stash and now is a good time as any to sew them up, be in style and use up a few stash pieces! Keep me posted if you sew something with velvet or velour!

    1. I have been thinking about sewing some black stretch velvet in my stash into a turtleneck dress. Maybe Vogue 8939 or Vogue 8866. And I'm thinking that Katherine Tilton's new jacket pattern, Butterick 6253 might be cute in a some of that fabric as well. I also have some in purple as well. This just might be the season that I finally stash bust this stash.

  3. My teen daughter asked me to make her a velvet skirt. I looked at her like she had 3 heads. I do not want to sew velvet, thank you very much!

I do have a cut of velour and keep saying I'm going to make KS3115 yoga pants from it!!! I think they'd be cozy for MN winter but wouldn't wear them outside...because I don't wear yoga pants outside!

    1. Lol, I don't blame you... after those little girl dresses in velvet that I made last year I swore that I would never sew velvet again. I remember it as a challenging fabric to work with and press. But this might be my opportunity to stash-bust this stuff once and for all.
