When sewing is snubbed...

When sewing is snubbed it sucks. Just saying.

Actually, it really sucks. At work today one of my co-workers asked "did you make that?"

I wore the green plaid dress.

"Yes" I replied.

And then she made this sour face and asked, "what, do you make everything?"

"No" I replied.

I just ignored her facial and verbal communication. It came from the same person who is critical of my choice not to colour my greying hair. It is not the first time, nor the last time I suspect, for a disdainful comment relating to my personal appearance or sewing hobby.

But then I came home from work and read Meg the Grand's blog post. It was about a recent social evening she planned and hosted with her friends. It made me smile. I'm sew grateful that I read her post today out of all days.

And then it made me wish I lived somewhere where I had friends that shared my interest in sewing.

If I talk about sewing with many of my friends their eyes glaze over in complete boredom. If there is any remote interest in sewing expressed, it is often when they are trying to solicit a sewing job. Usually, it is a request to sew cushions or some other home furnishing project.

If I decline and offer up the name of an upholster that I know the response is typically, "I don't want to spend that much!"

~sigh~

At least I feel connected to an online sewing community who always manage to lift my spirits. Gotta love that. Thanks! Now I'm going to pour myself a glass of wine and raise a glass to all you fabulous bloggers that write amazing stories that always manage to put a smile on my face and inspire me to keep sewing.

Cin cin!

And Happy Sewing!

  1. I am in the same boat as you- no local sewist partners in crime to commiserate or rejoice with. I think sometimes if I wear one more creation to work they are going to take up a collection for me! Poor Anne can't afford to buy her clothes!

  2. Wow! That's pretty rude. Kind of strange behaviour from a grown-up too.

There is no one around me interested in sewing either. A few knitters, but no sewers. The internet makes a huge difference. It's nice to be encouraged and pick up tips.

    1. It is true about the internet, I discovered Colette Patterns and Decades of Style Pattern Company by reading about them through the online sewing community. And I finally achieved an invisible zipper that I was happy with by tips posted on a blog. Joy!

  3. Remember back in November when a few Winnipeggers did a PR day for their 10 year anniversary? Well, the three of us have gotten together a couple times since then, mostly the chit chat, but have also hauled along our sewing machines and stitched together in Sheila's sewing studio. If you'd like, you'd be welcome to join us! We're getting together again this coming Sunday, and will probably meet up again in the next month or two.

Let me know by email at sewingonpins [at] gmail [dot] com if you'd like to join us!

  4. Darling friend, we may not live near each other, but we can definitely sew together in spirit! I've had people think I'm strange or that what I do is completely unusual because if I wanted to, I could go to Old Navy and pay $5 and get a t-shirt - why would I want to make one? Why not, I say? And when people give me sideways glances, I offer to teach them. If they glaze over, I tend to bring up movie costumes and sewing -http://clothesonfilm.com/ - this blog gives me lots of things to talk about. Everyone loves movies and TV shows, right?

Let me know how it goes, and if nothing else, we can all sew together virtually :)

  5. Awww! I am very fortunate to have a few good sewing friends. I know what you mean about the eyes glazing over for the ones that don't sew. I'm here for you. I give good talks about, "Finish it! You'll be so happy when it is done and no one will see the inside apart from you," if you ever need one. :-)

    1. lol, I could use a few of those talks. I've had Vogue 1263 and 2787 cut and sitting around for months, waiting for me to get to work on it. I could use a virtual kick-in-the-pants now and then.

  6. sorry to comment on such an old post but I just found your blog so I was having a look,
What a cow your colleague is ! How shallow too. I don`t dye my hair either - I am fighting back on societies expectations about aging and youth etc. A long time ago I received some negative comments about my sewing - I was sewing PJs for my children at the time but the woman who made it - well I don`t think she was a happy person really so I didn`t let it get to me and I certainly didn`t stop sewing . I love sewing blogs - we understand each other`s love of sewing even if we have completely different tastes, budgets, styles etc.
